The nude is almost complete. Contouring, then glazing, then varnishing.
Varnishing… A friend commented about my white pants. This is Labor Day after all, so I could be taking the last opportunity to wear white (if I were a stickler for fashion rules), but this is simply my painting outfit. It’s very new, so I haven’t had a chance to stain it yet.

Here is a snapshot of a work in progress – a private commission of an acrylic painting on stretched canvas. This work was commissioned as a gift in appreciation of a friend. I cannot think of a more thoughtful gesture than commissioning one of a kind work of art in someone else’s honor.

I sought a bold and vibrant color scheme for this project and the (almost) finished painting is full of life and energy.

I have wanted to paint birch trees for a long time. I miss the birch forests of my native Poland, the smell of the foliage, the touch of the rough bark. The birch tree in Polish psyche symbolizes serenity and gentleness. In the traditional Polish folk songs the lovers kiss and the fallen soldier finds his final rest under the birch tree.

For those of you who wonder what I have been doing, since my visual artistic output has diminished in the last six months, I have been working intensely on my debut album Lacrimosa.

I suppose there are many ways to market music, but for the readers of this blog I will simply say, if you like my paintings, you will like my music! I had several friends to comment that listening to Lacrimosa stirs creative energy in them. I hope you will experience the same and tell me about it.

For now I am on iTunes and CD Baby. More digital distributors, including Amazon to follow and the CD is due August 1.

I have always been partial to blue hues, but only to a certain part of the spectrum. I prefer the cool shades of the color, washed out and grayed out Baltic Sea after the storm or unsaturated values of the morning sky.

Shedding – old feathers fall away with old fears. To me art making is often about overcoming my own fears and reaching the inner sanctuary where I can be unconstrained by the expectations of my critics and freed from the old stifling patterns. It’s also about letting go of the past and creating new and unimagined before reality. I’ve heard a friend once say that before the flow there must be an ebb.

Here is another one of my digital paintings. When describing the technique I used to create it, I like to say that I worked with digital paint. I created the image with computer software, but wanted to preserve an organic and natural feel, so I mimicked the properties of acrylic and watercolor paints.

Adrift

Through the cracks in the windows
The sea whistles its ancient song
Waves crash against the walls
In endless ostinatos
The foam
Seeps in under the door
Sizzling mysteriously

Rock me to sleep
Tell me stories of sunken cathedrals
With stained glass windows
A mirage of aqua and sapphire

Deep beneath
In currents of seaweeds
Medusas comb their hair
With coral reef forks
And braid it with garlands of seashells

Thousands of tears mingle
In the ocean of forgetfulness
All cares drown
In slow motion
Slower still
Be still
Let me float
Adrift
